Chiefs Head Peak (13,579'), the third tallest peak in the Park, situated between Longs Peak and Powell Peak on the Continental Divide, resembles (to some) that of a head. This is a feature most noticeable from the northern areas in the Park, such as the views from Lumpy Ridge. Access is via a Park trailhead in the Wild Basin area, Sandbeach Lake Trail System, via Mt. Orion.
The Indians called it "The Head." The mountain was named Mt. Barrett earlier, but in 1915 it was changed by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to Chiefs Head Peak, amid others' suggestions, to honor the native name already in use.#
